Many people nowadays want to improve their looks, and to be honest, it’s not a surprise. In the modern world, more and more people feel anxious watching photoshopped Instagram models with their razor-sharp jawlines and ripped beach bodies. Chances are you’ve also had these thoughts.

Luckily for you, looks are something you can improve pretty easily. Sure, some people may have better genetics and a more attractive face, but there are tons of stuff you can still do.

Before we start, let me elaborate that looking good and being attractive is not the same thing. Yes, looks are a crucial part of your attractiveness, but there’s so much more like your charisma and sense of humor. However, looks are something that matter in today’s society, like it or not.

Why do looks matter?

The fact is that your looks are the first thing people notice about you and they will make decisions based on that. You shouldn’t decide someone’s worth based on their looks, but people still seem to prefer good-looking people in everything, especially dating.

There’s a lot of fat-shaming going on, but also body positivity. You can find countless opinions about whether or not looks should matter this much, and if you should improve your looks.

Again, you should never determine someone’s worth based on their looks, but I understand that better-looking people find it easier to succeed in anything. See, when you see someone who takes care of their body, you know that they have goals, and they value their own health. 

On top of that, there are countless theories with different biological and social proof, many of which kinda make sense. However, one thing is sure, looks do matter! And rather than getting upset about it, it’s easier and more rewarding to accept it and use it to your advantage.

How to look better – Step by step

The good news is, there’s a lot that you can do to improve your looks. Some people may have more things to do than others, but we all have one thing in common when it comes to looking better. It’s possible, and the work will pay off eventually.

A funny thing about looks is that the more regular and average you are, the better you seem to look. The best-looking guys are the ones with muscular bodies and common hairstyles. The best-looking girls seem to have average, long hair, and a normal amount of make-up, etc.

These steps are something that you have full control over and will make you look better if you execute them.

Body and fitness

When it comes to looks, you don’t need a body fat level of 5% or a thin stomach like the photoshopped Instagram models. People can actually find those kinds of people unattractive because their body fat level is too low and they look unnatural!

Having a good-looking body isn’t rocket science and you can have it by doing just two things! Two very simple things that are here:

  • Having a healthy lifestyle a.k.a eating mostly clean and doing regular exercise
  • Taking action and staying consistent

You don’t have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sommer Ray to have a good-looking body. Some people may have more to do than others due to their genetics or starting point, but consistency is a key to success in anything. If you want to improve your looks, being in a regular, healthy shape is enough! If you have ambition, feel free to have bigger goals.

This topic causes a lot of conflicts nowadays. You can find a lot of people speaking about fat-shaming, and claiming that overweight people can be healthy and happy. This is true. You shouldn’t discriminate against anyone and fat people can have a great life, but you can’t neglect the fact that obesity can cause serious health problems.

Taking care of your body has tons of both physical and mental health benefits. Your body is a vehicle that you use to go through your life, so it makes sense to take care of it.

Facial appearance

This is crucial. When people speak about looks, they often speak about your facial appearance. These are several things you need to take care of if you want to improve your looks, but these are some of the easiest too. Better yet, you can use these to instantly be more attractive.

Your facial appearance consists of the following factors:

  • Hairstyle
  • Skin/hygiene
  • Facial hair

All these are something you can improve instantly and will have a big effect on your looks! Let’s go through them more specifically.

Hairstyle

A sharp, fresh-looking hairstyle is something you’re going to need if you want to improve your looks. Especially if you’re male. Luckily it’s pretty easy.

You have to consider what kind of hairstyle fits the shape of your head, feels good for you, and matches your style. A great way to get some inspiration is to put “best hairstyle for men/women” or something like that on Google and see the pictures.

That’s how you can find actors and models with similar facial shapes and styles to you, and see how they’re looking. Then just go to the barbershop and show the picture. You can also ask them for ideas.

Remember to wash your hair when you need to and make sure it looks good. And for your own sake, do not become one of those guys who let their hair grow relentlessly and become greasy. That’s gross as fuck.

When styling, I recommend using a hair product. Make sure to use a good one because low-quality waxes can’t hold your hair still and only make it greasy and disgusting. I personally use Sevich hair powder and really enjoy it. It makes my hair easy to shape and gives a nice buff of volume, without making it greasy at all. 

If you decide to use wax, don’t apply too much of it. Instead, focus on setting your hair in the right direction right after washing it.

Skin/Hygiene

There’s nothing too complicated in your skin and hygiene. Just remember to keep your skin clean and moisturized. Some kind of acne is common among young people, but most of the time you can take care of it by washing your face regularly, avoiding greasy food, and especially touching it with dirty hands.

Moisturizing is also huge to improve your looks. If you have dry skin on your face, be sure to use a moisturizer or some kind of lotion. A great way to take care of your face is to clean it and moisturize it regularly.

Some people use products to whiten their teeth, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Just brush them twice a day and you’ll have a nice smile.

Facial hair

Facial hair means basically your beard. If you don’t have one, then you don’t have to worry about it, but if you do, remember to keep it clean and fresh.

The easiest thing to do is to shave every there and then and go completely without a beard. Remember to shave often enough, because a beard can grow very fast. Be precise, because some random hair near your lips or elsewhere you didn’t shave properly look dumb af.

If you have enough beard to start styling it, you can definitely do that. Make sure it fits your hairstyle and stays fresh. I recommend always avoiding a neckbeard and trim it regularly. Don’t be one of those guys who just let their beard grow without keeping it clean and fresh. This goes with any kind of beard.

Some less important but remarkable mentions are your eyebrows and nasal hair. They don’t matter that much, but make sure they’re not overgrown.

Style

If you want to improve your looks, your style plays a remarkable role. It can be the determining factor between a highly stylish alpha male and that weird guy who always wears the same T-shirt and sweatpants.

Obviously, there are situations where you don’t need to put much effort into thinking about your style. In a funeral, the dressing code is pretty clear, and any normal sportswear is good at the gym, but sometimes you can get a little creative.

School and different free-time activities are great places to display your style. Your style should be a way to display your personality and make your presence apparent. Again, feel free to use Google to find some inspiration. You can google the following, or just start to come up with ideas on your own:

  • Smart casual style
  • Casual style
  • Bad boy style
  • Roadman style
  • Athlete style

You don’t need to copy those, but consider getting some inspiration and see what fits your looks and personality. Remember also to dress in way that’s relevant for a situation. A party and a family dinner have a different dressing code.

Clothes

You can find different clothes all over the internet and shopping centers. I recommend going to an actual store specialized in clothing, and see what fits the vision that you’ve made for yourself. It’s also a good idea to ask the staff about their opinion or talk with someone who knows about fashion.

Some people like to spend a lot of money on this. I personally like shopping for normal clothes in a shopping center. I don’t buy my clothes in a superstore because the quality in a store specialized in clothing is so much better.

Just have fun by executing your vision and don’t make it too complicated.

Accessories

Adding some accessories to your style may also be a good idea. Often, a nice watch is more than enough, but feel free to shop for jewelry, rings, or something like that if it fits your style.

I like the Vincero watches because they have a look of a luxury watch, but the price is very reasonable ($150-200).

Hygiene

What I mean by hygiene, is everything from deodorant to your body hair. I think the so-called “holy trinity” of looks consists of your fitness, facial appearance, and style, but I’ll add some additional tips here.

Obviously, when it comes to hygiene, make sure to have one. Take a shower when you need to and make sure your clothes are clean and fresh. This should be a no-brainer, but I’ve seen some people neglecting this.

Using deodorant is always good, so make sure to have one. It doesn’t have to be a fancy one, as long as it prevents you from smelling like sweat.

Having a cologne and using it occasionally is also a great idea. If you’re in your late teens older and you don’t have one, you should get it. I use Versace Eros and I’ve received compliments about its scent.

Remember to keep your nails clean also. Cut them when you have to and make sure that no dirt appears under them. If you want to have a fresh breath, use a mouthwash or a mint pastille.

Many of these tips we’re small additions, some of which are not about your looks, but I added them because they level up your appearance. All these tips combined will have remarkable results.

The great thing about these steps is that you can implement them pretty much instantly. I guess you have some clue on how you can improve your looks based on my tips.

What I recommend you to do is to make a list of these steps and execute them. One by one. List everything. Fitness, hairstyle, clothes, cologne… Then decide if you need improvement on any step and do it. This is how you’ll achieve a lot just in one day!

A crucial thing I want you to realize is that you shouldn’t improve your looks in order to get validation or cover your insecurities. If you want to be more confident or anything like that, there are many more important things than looks.
